It’s easy to understand the importance of community and support in recovery when we are navigating our way through difficult times, but it’s just as important to have support through new beginnings, transitions, and exciting milestones.
When we celebrate an important milestone in our recovery, transition to new and exciting chapters of life, or start any new endeavor, support from our recovery community is important to honor successes, be present for us during times of change, and to bolster our recovery as we move forward.
Community Support
In early sobriety, it’s vital to be surrounded by people who are living a life of recovery, who understand what we are going through, be present through transitions, and celebrate recovery as well.
“I left Herren Wellness last August, and I’m still there all the time. It’s like a giant family there. I moved up to this area all the way from Alabama. I don’t have family or anything here, but at the same time, I do. I have a whole new family of people I love and trust who I can depend on, and they can depend on me. It’s a really beautiful thing.”
~ Zach, Former Guest
When guests leave the Herren Wellness core program it’s not the end of a relationship, it’s the beginning. Recovery is a life-long process, and the community is there for former guests every step of the way.
“Herren Wellness is like a family, like a whole new family. I visit sometimes but I always know that they are always a phone call away. I can go in there anytime. I can walk into the kitchen and grab a sandwich and say hello to people and I’m always welcome. If I’m having a bad day someone will always talk to me.”
~ Rachel, Former Guest
Celebrating Milestones
Some of the most exciting and inspirational moments happen when alumni come celebrate recovery milestones at Herren Wellness. They return – often with their own family and/or support network – to share their experience, strength, and hope with current guests and staff and share the ways their lives have changed in recovery.
“The community there is the key to the success of the program. When good people get together to support one another, you see that miracle happen.”
~ Brian, Former Guest
Early recovery involves a lot of hard work and challenges, so it’s vital to celebrate milestones with people who understand just what it takes to get sober, and who are there for you no matter what.
“Herren Wellness cares for people, and it’s an amazing thing to be part of that community. The best friends I have in the world are from Herren Wellness. People show up for each other, and I’m trying to show up for people too, and be a good person. That’s what recovery is all about.”
~ Dan, Former Guest
Transitions and Support
When guests transition from Herren Wellness’ core residential program, there is often trepidation about the next chapter in their recovery. It’s important for every guest to have a comprehensive plan in place, including an active and involved recovery support network. Recovery looks different for everyone, so we work with guests during their entire stay to be sure they have a plan in place for all important aspects of their lives, including wellness, self-care, family and relationships, work, and living environment.
Sometimes, guests are not prepared to return to their former living environment, and for them, our Lincoln Street facility is available to transition from the core program and remain physically close to our Jacob Hill location and community.
“Lincoln Street was huge for me. I was ready to move on but wanted (and needed) to stay close to my Herren Wellness family. I am not from the area, but after going to Herren Wellness I knew I wanted to stay here to remain close to the recovery network I had built here. Lincoln Street was that first step for me. I was able to keep the Jacob Hill community close and plan for the next chapter of my life.”
~ Claudia, Former Guest
Herren Wellness Alumni Community
Herren Wellness’ active and thriving alumni community is an important part of the lives of the guests, families, and staff. Alumni often attend the weekly Herren Wellness support group held every Wednesday evening, as well as our monthly Alumni Meetings. If someone isn’t able to physically attend, video conferencing is always available. Through this active community, the Herren Wellness family continues to grow every day.
“We see it all the time, how former guests who stay close to the Herren Wellness family and actively participate in the alumni programs grow and thrive in their recovery. They are able to continue what they started at Herren Wellness, help others who are just starting their journey, and build a network of support and love.”
~ Meg, Former Guest and Wellness Associate
For guests, former guests, and their families, the Herren Wellness family is always there to support, guide, and encourage them. When someone’s stay ends, their recovery journey is just beginning, and Herren Wellness is there for them all along the way.
“Our community continues to grow organically and beautifully every day through our alumni community. Alumni return all the time to share a meal, connect with current guests, celebrate a milestone, or just stop by to chat. Our doors are always open for them. The alumni are a huge part of our growing family, and it not only helps current guests, but bolsters their own recovery as well.”
